Felis catus

The cat is a mammal of the order of carnivores, family Felidae, subfamily felinae. Currently, the cat is the most popular domestic animal in the world.

According to a study published in 2012, cats were domesticated around 2200 BC by Egyptians.

  • The skeleton of a cat is composed of 20 bones.

  • The back muscles are very flexibl, the hind paws muscles are powerful, features that give both suppleness and ample expansion when jumping.

  • The cat has sensitive hearing at high frequencies up to 30,000 Hz, while the human ear is limited to 20,000 Hz.

  • The sight is the primary sense of the cats. Like hearing, the sight of cats is much broader than that of men.

  • The sense of smell is 4 times more developed than in humans. Smell is used for delimiting the territory, but also for checking food quality (altered or poisoned).

  • Purring  is a typical manifestation of independence - to the mother at birth or to people, a message of pain or pleasure.

  • By scratcheing, there are removed the unnecessary layers of tissue composing the horny claws. If a cat scratch the furniture, for instance, it means it needs a surface on which to sharpen their claws.

  • A cat sleeps between 15 and 18 per day.

  • Diversified diet.

One of the reasons people dislike cats are allergic reactions to cat fur or saliva.

Stray cats can cause harm in people's gardens, destroying the flowers, seedbed or lawn. Also, stray cats transmit fleas and, when searching for food, they can enter homes, barns, bridges.
