Martes

The marten is a type of arboreal or terrestrial carnivores animals form Mustelidae family, family jat gathers 8 species found in Europe, Asia and North America. 

Details

Usually, the term "marten" is a common name to all species from Martes family, species that are similar to ferret or weasel.

Features

  • Precious fur, golden-brown to black. The fur is darker on the legs and on top of the tail and more open to the chest.

  • Body length (head and trunk): between 34 and 61 cm.

  • Tail length: 15 to 30 cm.

  • Weighing between 0.680 and 2 kg.

  • Elongated body, slender, with large head and pointed muzzle.

  • Triangular, large ears. with rounded peaks.

  • Bushy, long tail, measuring between 1/2 and 2/3 of the body and head length.

  • Arboreal mammals, martens are active both day and night.

  • They hunt alone and their diet is more carnivorous. Martens feed on with mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, lizards, birds and even small deers frogs, fish, snails, poultry or eggs.

Behavior

The stone marten is causing considerable damage to poultry. They first kill the birds, the drink the blood or eat the brains of chikens.
