Lepus europaeus

The rabbit is a rodent mammal, with a medium size, which is found in almost all types of biotope.


They preferre, however, agricultural land in the plains, hills and low hills and avoid swampy places with stagnant water.


  • Mainly nocturnal activitity.

  • Length: about 47-56 cm, tail 8-9 cm, ears 12-17 cm.

  • Weight: 3.5-4 kg.

  • The body of the hare is extended, laterally flattened and the lips are fleshy and mobile.

  • The ears are long, as the cornet, the tail is short and highed and the eyes are big and bulging.

  • Long and spiny whiskers.

  • Hind legs are long, with 5 fingers and the previous ones are short with four fingers and feet covered with hair.

  • The coloring ranges from yellowish tan with greyish hairs on the back up to white belly and white clean on the underside of the tail. Tips of the ears are black. Generaly, the color makes the rabbit to be confused with the land covered by grass and dry leaves.

  • Hearing is the most developed sense, the smell is mediocre and the sight is weak (easily distinguished only moving objects and those that contrasts sharply with the habitat).

  • Diet: varies depending on the season. From autumn to spring it consumes dried herbs, stems and bark of woody species, fruits, herbs and juicy fruits. If food becomes poor, it retreats in the forests and it can reach even in places with quick access into people's gardens. It also feeds with clover or oats.


In agriculture, the hare can cause significant damage by gnawing through the shell of young fruit trees, melons, beets, carrots etc. Biting the stalks and the rind of trees may harm visible in forestry.
