Mosquitoes are a family of Diptera insects from the nematocera suborder. Mosquitoes are ubiquitous insects and are found from the tropics to the polar lands. 

Details

They manage to survive harsh winters or dry seasons, depending on the habitat. Equally high is the degree of proliferation, since they manage to lay eggs in all types of waters, from very clean to highly polluted waters, from ponds on streets to rivers and seas.

Features

  • The body is made up of head, chest and abdomen and has a fragile constitution.

  • Color: gray brown.

  • Body length: between 3.5 - 5 mm.

  • They have inserted three pairs of thin legs and a long narrow wings in the chest.

  • Mouthparts is formed for stuning and sucking. The males’ proboscis is not built to sting.

  • During a meal, the female sucks the equivalent blood of her weight.

  • Breathing through the trachea.

  • The mosquito is reproducing within 48 hours from the nymph stage. Females mate only once during their lives, because they are able to store sperm from males in some bags inside their body and to single fertilize these eggs series.

  • The adult mosquito lay eggs when the water temperature exceeds 10 ° C (late April and early May). After a period of blood feeding, the female deposits between 150 and 300 eggs, wrapped in a sticky coating. The new generation of mosquitoes in spring and summer succeed every 15-20 days, depending on water temperature; larval development occurs only in stagnant waters.

Behavior

Mosquitoes are annoying and harmful insects. Although they do not cause materials damages, mosquitoes are annoying because of the noise they make while flying and, most often at night.

The females feed on blood every 2-3 days and their stings have unpleasant effects, but these depend on the intensity of the allergic reaction of each person.

In tropical areas, mosquitoes are the main transmitters of certain diseases to humans and animals, including: malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, filarioaza.
