Lesser black-backed gull

The lesser black-backed gull is a species that only nests in the northen areas of the continent.

In Romania, this species of gull can be seen from October until May. Some specimens remain during the summer in the seaside and Danube Delta areas, but without nesting.


  • Plumage: the back of the body is dark gray and the rest of the body is white.

  • Yellow beak, slightly curved to the top, with a red distinctive patch to the bottom.

  • Lenght: about 52 – 74 cm.

  • Wingspan: 135 – 150 cm.

  • Weight: 550 – 1000 grams.

  • Diet: molluscs, crustaceans, small birds and mammals.
